Before Sunday night, I'd almost forgotten what it was like to completely lose myself at a dance concert. Never once at this show did I stop and think how long I'd been freaking out or how much longer I had to go. I'd been a little jealous of those on stage when I saw Gillis in Providence last April so I given good advice from a friend crowded around the stage entrance before the set. It turned out to be a smart decision. Looking out over the crowd at a dance concert is worlds better than looking up at stage, and we got attacked by leaf blowers, toilet paper, and confetti.
In all honesty, the show was musically a blur. I noticed that in contrast from the earlier one I saw, Gillis remashed many of his old samples into new pieces instead of repeating old songs. Given his much larger repertoire this makes sense, and it's nice to know that a fan like me will never hear the same set twice. Aside from this, the most impressive thing was the shear magnitude of energy coming from the whole venue. All three levels were full of people cheering at every recognizable sample, and those around me, stranger and friend, had the widest smiles I've seen at any performance.
I'll show you what I mean. Also, was Grand Buffet brilliant? I know the hype guy was probably the greatest musical invention since the french horn.
